Robert was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Robert S. and Marion A. (Flanagan) Carroll. He served our country in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958. Robert was joined in marriage with his former spouse, Anita Mae (Robinson) Carroll, on July 27, 1963, in Waukon. He attended the court reporting program at the Minnesota School of Business, graduating in 1968, and served as a freelance and official reporter for 30 years in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities.
Retiring and subsequently relocating to Dubuque in 1996, Robert followed his true passion for history as an educator at the National Mississippi River Museum. He looked forward each day to working with all generations who visited and toured the building and the William M. Black dredge boat, which became his specialty.
An avid writer, he was a frequent contributor to many newspaper and magazine columns throughout his life. His faith in God was paramount to how he lived his life, which expressed itself in worship and ministry to those in need in many different church communities throughout his life. A lifelong Roman Catholic, he also associated himself as an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque.
Surviving are his children, Robert Thomas (Dennis Melchi) Carroll of Oconomowoc, Wis., Patrice (Terry) Murray of Cedar Rapids, Patrick David (William Lison) Carroll of Milwaukee, Wis., and Michael John (Brett Patten) Carroll of McAllen, Texas; grandchildren, Brittany Murray and Patterson Murray; and siblings, Mary Catherine (Dick) DeLaubenfels of Portland, Ore., and Michael Carroll of Dubuque.
