Robert "Buckeye" Bronemann, 75, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at United Church of Monticello with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery with military honors. Survivors include his wife, Carole; two daughters, Pam (Craig) Thompson, Monticello, and Jackie (John) White, Anamosa; four grandchildren, Hannah and Hunter Thompson and Robert and Dalton Wilcox; four brothers, Mike of Anamosa and Larry (Ellie), James (Katie) and Gary, all of Monticello; and three sisters, Jean Grimm, Tucson, Ariz., Judith (James) Leggett, Urbandale, and Penny (Dean) Ehrisman, Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald; and two sisters, Suzie and Margie.

Robert Lee Bronemann was born June 27, 1941, in Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Donald and Theresa Ehlts Bronemann. Buckeye graduated from Monticello Community Schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., where he met his future wife, Carole. Robert Bronemann and Carole Noel were married on Nov. 15, 1963, in Monticello. Buckeye started working at Energy Manufacturing in 1963. He was employed at Energy for 40 years, 35 years as a foreman. He retired in 2003.

Buckeye loved Fords from the 1950s. He restored two for himself and helped a friend with another. In his 20s and 30s, he raced stock cars and did demo derbies. He even won the demo derby at the Iowa State Fair in 1975. When he wasn't working on his car, he loved to go fishing in Minnesota, hunt mushrooms in the spring, and watch the Cubs and the Hawkeyes. Buckeye was an avid poker player. He played in area tournaments quite often and had played in the Senior Texas Hold'em Tournament in Las Vegas.
