Monticello
Robert "Bob" Lubben, 89, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor Emory Gillespie will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
Surviving are his wife of over 65 years, Marjorie; a son, David (Lisa) Lubben; six grandchildren, Lydia (Neal) Grant, Lael and Clayton Lubben, Allison (Josh) Kelchen, and Emma Lubben and Dane Heiar; three great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Collins and Owen; and a brother-in-law, George Schneiter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Alan, in 2009; a brother, Irvin; and four sisters, Lorraine, Esther, Arlene and Shirley.
Robert Howard Lubben was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of William and Anna Harms Lubben. He grew up on the cattle farm they owned in Castle Grove Township. He graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the Class of 1948. Bob went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to Monticello, and then attended University of Dubuque and the University of Iowa for a semester each. He worked for Energy Manufacturing for several years. Bob married Marjorie Thomas in Dec. 24, 1952, at the First Congregational Church, Monticello. They started farming the next spring on a farm south of Sand Springs. He had a herd of 150 cows, 600 head of cattle and raised corn, soybeans and hay. In 1989, they moved to a farm just north of Langworthy and turned the farming operation over to his sons.
Bob enjoyed the many family gatherings at the Lubben Pond that he made in 1974. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Jones County Cattlemen in 1998. His foremost love was farming and his family, especially the grandchildren.
