Robert “Bob” James Sueppel, 86, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at The Views of Marion. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 13, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, located at 2310 First Ave. NE, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the Mass. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Bob was born on Feb. 14, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Francis W. Sr. and Bertha Ann (Bauer) Sueppel. He graduated from high school in Iowa City and attended the University of Iowa. From 1956 to 1959, Bob served honorably in the U.S. Army. On April 23, 1960, he was united in marriage to Laurine Joan Gaffey at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook, Iowa. Bob was employed with Collins Radio Corporation and Rockwell Graphics (GOSS), until his retirement. Bob officiated for many high school sports events, including softball, basketball and volleyball. He was an avid loyal Iowa Hawkeyes fan, enjoyed bike riding and participated in RAGBRAI for over 30 years. Bob particularly loved to talk about his time in the service and he never met a stranger. Bob will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bob is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Laurie (Kevin) Powrie of Shellsburg, Iowa, Jim (Dawn) Sueppel of Marion, Mary Beth Sueppel Hewitt of Bellevue, Neb., and Joy (Brent) Hedding of Hudson, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Gerot of Hills, Iowa; a host of many extended family members including nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless good friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Laurine, in 2022; parents; brother, Francis (Bud) Sueppel Jr.; two sisters, Mary Fulmer and Marjorie Gingerich; two sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Views of Marion for the special care they gave to Bob, especially Ashlyn, Stacey, Regina, Estee and Cara.
Memorials in Bob’s memory may be directed to either St. Matthew Catholic Church or Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
