Robert “Bob” Arnold Boettcher, 94, of Marion, died Saturday, January 3, 2025, at Linn Manor Care Center. Burial will take place at a later date. Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Robert and his family.
Robert is survived by his wife, Norbe Boettcher of Marion; daughter, Heidi Boettcher of Redwood City, California; and brother, Chandler Boettcher of Denver, Colorado.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
Robert was born on January 23, 1931, son of Lester and Martha Praedel Boettcher in Beloit, Wisconsin. Bob graduated from Marion High School in 1949. He went on to attend the University of Iowa and earned his B.A. and M.A. Mr. Boettcher once was a gardener at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, which was a great job for him since he loved gardening and football. He had also been an art teacher of junior high and high school in Marion. Bob was a proud veteran and served for two years in the army during the Korean War. Since he was a quiet man, he joined but one club, The Fil-Am Club (Filipino American Society of Eastern Iowa) and had been a member for many years.
Though Robert’s major was art, he so loved history. In recent years, he was interested in military history and especially so the period of time from 1941 – 42 when America was at war with Japan on Bataan the Philippine Islands. He also travelled to Japan to trace the battles of the Genji/Heike warriors of 1185. In sports, he was a football fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, and The Great Army Team of 1945. The things that gave him pleasure were playing his ukulele, hiking in Japan, having a one man show while in Japan, and landscape gardening.
Bob will miss his friends and his loved ones, eating ice cream, and his homemade chili con carne.
Memorials may be directed to the family for an established memorial fund.
