Robert John Barrett, 74,
of Hiawatha, passed away at home on May 13, 2017, following complications of Parkinson's disease. Services for Robert will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. A vigil service will be held at
4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home. Friends and family may visit with the family from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Robert is survived by his wife; his daughter, Katherine Hines (Dan); his sister, Anne Haworth (Phil DiBlasi); his brother, Patrick Barrett (Connie); his grandchildren, Andrew, Charles, Matthew and Grace Hines; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother- and father-in-law, Doyle and Deloras (Meyer) Kauffman; his nephew, Robert Haworth; his sisters-in-law, Verena (Kauffman) Gutherie, Karen (Kauffman) Calkins and Janice Marie Kauffman; and his brother-in-law, David Kauffman.
Robert was born Sept. 28, 1942, to Robert and Mary (Decker) Barrett, in Independence, Iowa. He graduated Regis High School in 1961, then joined the U.S. Army. He proudly served during the Vietnam War. In 1980, he married the love of his life, Anita Kauffman. In his professional life, he worked as a grain mill operator. An avid race fan, he could be found watching NASCAR whenever he had the opportunity. He was an avid bicycle rider and loved riding both long and short distances. Family always came first for Robert and he loved spending every moment he could with them.
Memorial donations may be made to the family to be dispersed at a later time.
