Robert Arnold, 96, of
Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at
the Vinton Lutheran Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Robert C. "Bob" Arnold, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on March 20, 1922, the son of John H. and Rella (Carter) Arnold. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and later received an M.A. from the University of Iowa, both in the field of music education.
He taught music in the Terril, Central City, Mechanicsville and Marion rural (Linn-Mar) schools prior to joining the Cedar Rapids school system. In Cedar Rapids, he taught at the old Jackson and Erskine schools prior to serving as principal at Lincoln, Monroe and Madison schools. He finished his career as a district curriculum consultant. Over the years, he also directed a number of church choirs. Bob was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on a PT boat, and saw service in the Solomon Islands, Palau Islands, Philippine Islands and Okinawa. On Feb. 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Ruth Bice at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. They had two sons, John Martin Arnold of Bloomington, Ind., and Steven Robert Arnold of Vinton. In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, J. Asa and Jack; and three sisters, Virginia Arnold, Florence Vorderberg and Margaret Anderson.
