Robert Lowell Armstrong, 90, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Monday, May, 9, 2016, at his home in Phoenix, Ariz. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, at St. Joseph Cemetery by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus with military services by the American Legion Honor Guard Post 727.
Robert is survived by two sons, James (Laura) Armstrong of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Mark (Deborah) Armstrong of Phoenix; four grandchildren, Daniel and Jamie Armstrong of Scottsdale, Ariz., Drew Armstrong of Phoenix and Sean Armstrong of Kaiserslautern, Germany; stepdaughters, Mary Cooley of Mason City and Deborah Ferguson of Florida; stepson, Robert Kurth of Florida; brother, John (Donna) Armstrong of Fergus Falls, Minn.; sister, Diane Elston of Overland Park, Kan.; four stepgranddaughters; and one stepgrandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Schultz; and wife of 30 years, Margerie May Hedges.
Robert was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Golden and Lavina Armstrong. Robert proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1944 to 1946. Robert retired in 1995 after working for more than 30 years as a salesman for Hach Brothers. He was a member of the Elks Club, American Legion and NRA.
Robert proudly watched his grandchildren grow to be upstanding young adults. He also enjoyed going to casinos, playing slot machines and once won a brand-new truck! Robert will always be remembered for having a loving heart and his favorite verse was, "Don't worry about what others think you should do, just do what is right."
Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warriors fund.
