On Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, Rita M. (Zobl) McDermott, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away at home from complications of diabetes, heart disease and a recent stroke. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, where a funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. John Flaherty officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A vigil service begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Rita was a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, born on July 23, 1929, to Victor and Tillie (Bulva) Zobl. She graduated from Saint Wenceslaus High School in 1947 and married Patrick F. McDermott on May 17, 1951, at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Rita retired from Rockwell Collins in 1988 after 23 years of service.
Rita enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye men's and women's basketball games and her soap operas, dining out with her relatives, her friends from school and her Rockwell Collins retirees. Rita also enjoyed the music of Lawrence Welk and loved eating anything chocolate.
Rita's faith and her family were very important to her.
Surviving her are five children, Kate McDermott, Fort Worth, Texas, Michael McDermott (Shirley Matheny), Edward McDermott (Leah Bond) and Lori McDermott, all of Cedar Rapids, and Eileen McDermott, with whom she made her home. Also surviving is one special grandson, Benjamin and wife Diana Dirks, Fort Worth, Texas; a great-grandson, Dylan Armstrong, Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Rita is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Jeanne Zobl, Donna Hernandez and Sara McDermott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick on Dec. 9, 2011; her parents; and her brother, Charles Zobl in 2001.
Rita's family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Mercy for the wonderful care they gave to their mother following her recent stroke.
