Rita Faith Garwood, 82, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, currently of Summit Pointe in Marion, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2014. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion by Father Dennis Cahill. Rosary: 4 p.m. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Rita was born June 29, 1932, the daughter of Paul Sr. and Helen (Geiger) Gatens in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from Norway High School in 1950. She married V.L. "Fish" Garwood on Sept. 6, 1952, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Norway. Rita worked at Rockwell Collins and retired in 1990.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and previously a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Judi (Alan) Boldra of Valley, Neb., Lori (Pat) Dolan of Iowa City, Patti Garwood of Mundelein, Ill., Cyndi (John) Hemesath of Cedar Rapids and Scott (Kirsten) Garwood of Bolingbrook, Ill.; grandchildren, Jenni (Adam) Stoll, Kyle (Anna) Boldra, Patrick Dolan and Madelyn and Audrey Hemesath; a great-grandson, Peyton Boldra; a brother, Paul Gatens Jr. of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Mary (John) VanHoeck of Hiawatha.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; an infant sister, Patricia; and her sister, Gaylene Lowder.
Rita was eternally optimistic about the Cubs, Hawkeyes and her children.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Rita.
