Riha, Evelyn V.
Evelyn V. Riha, 80, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at West Ridge Care Center following a long illness. Funeral mass: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Private family burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery, near Vining. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home Friday, with prayers at 3:30 p.m.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Stanley; five children, Carol Ann Riha (Padraic D. McGaugh) of West Des Moines, Janice (Mike) Doutre of Sequim, Wash., Sharon Oglesby of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Larry) Linik of Corvallis, Ore., and David (Dawne) Riha of Eagan, Minn.; five grandchildren; Nathan and Brandon Riha, Kaitlyn and Sam Oglesby and Nicholas Linik.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Florence Deetz; and her brother, Ken Deetz.
Evelyn Violet Deetz was born Oct. 30, 1930, in Eden Township, Fayette County, Iowa. She moved to Cedar Rapids, as a child. She attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated in 1949 from Roosevelt High School, where she made many lifelong friends. She graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1951, and completed a postgraduate nursing residency at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, N.J.
She briefly worked in Houston, Texas, in the mid-1950s and then returned to Iowa, where she married Stanley C. Riha in Vining, Iowa, in 1957. The two had met years earlier at the Danceland ballroom in Cedar Rapids, where each had gone with friends.
As a registered nurse in labor and delivery at St. Luke's for 31 years, she helped deliver thousands of babies while having five of her own.
She was an excellent seamstress, creating many school costumes. She was an avid reader and enjoyed old movies. She was a much loved wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
