Richard J. Zenisek, 85, passed peacefully at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, July 6, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fairfax, by the Rev. Dennis Juhl. According to Richard's wishes, a private burial will be held for immediate family only at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax, with military honors by Pekomy Post 572. A rosary will be at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, and friends may visit from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.
Richard is survived by his wife, Bernice Ann Zenisek, of Fairfax; his daughter, Ann M. Anderson (Mark), and his son, Paul J. Zenisek (Anne); grandchildren, Megan Lahr (Nate), Sarah Zenisek, Eric Zenisek, Adam Anderson and Laura Anderson; and his sister, Evelyn Bartosh of Walford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Dlouhy.
Richard was born Dec. 14, 1929, in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Anthony and Geneva (Bueter) Zenisek. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church. Dick served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. In 1957, he married Bernice Schulte at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fairfax. The couple made their home in Fairfax for over 58 years.
Dick was employed by Square D for 38 years as an engineer and supervisor. He was very active in the Fairfax community as mayor of Fairfax for five years and served on the city council. He also was a 50-year member of American Legion Pekomy Post 572 and held various offices throughout his membership. Richard took great pride in his family and friendships established throughout his life with the community he appreciated. He enjoyed sports and outdoor recreational activities.
His genuine kindness and character will be missed by those whose lives he touched.
Memorial donations will be gifted to Camp Courageous of Iowa.
