Richard was born on October 18, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Norbert and Marie (Unash) Engler. A longtime resident of Cedar Rapids before moving to the Des Moines area, he was a devoted member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and retired from Rockwell Collins after working there for many years.
A true tinkerer at heart, Richard enjoyed taking things apart, whether or not they got put back together. He had a passion for woodworking and a keen interest in radios, electronics, and computers. He also loved music and could often be heard whistling or humming a tune. Above all, he cherished his family and the time he spent with them.
He is survived by his children: Steve (Vicki) Engler of Bettendorf, Bob (Rita) Engler of Urbandale, Mariann (Jon) Ryan of Cedar Rapids, and Christopher Engler of Marshalltown; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sisters, Joyce Hladek of Surprise, Arizona and Kay Walsh of Clive; and his twin brother, Bob (Carol Nilles) Engler of Cedar Rapids. He is also remembered by many extended family members and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Sue Wendt and Carol Engler; and his brother, Leo Engler.
