Richard "Doc" Upah, 85, of Belle Plaine, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine with Deacon Joe Behounek presiding. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hrabak Funeral Home with a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m.
Richard Charles Upah was born April 27, 1929, to Charles and Caroline (Dvorak) Upah. He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1947. He was united in marriage to Garnet Rhodes on Dec. 26, 1950. They had three children. In 1986, he retired and they moved to Belle Plaine.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Garnet; one son, John (Mary Jo) Upah of Brooklyn; two daughters, Julie Wonrau of Belle Plaine and Joy (Barry) Osborn of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Andrea, Ben (Bev) and Jaye Upah, Jesse (Amanda Daughtrey) Wonreau and Jennifer (Tyler Kintzel) Wonreau and Sidney and Natalie Osborn; three great-grandchildren, Divonni and Liam Upah and Devon Wonrau.
Born on the family farm near Chelsea, he spent most of his life living and working there. Richard spent many years working for the Belle Plaine Livestock Auction. He was a member of St. Joseph's and St. Michael's Catholic Church. He was also the maintenance man for St. Michael's.
Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known by many of his hunting buddies as "Dead-Eye Dick." In his younger years, Richard was also a basketball, baseball and softball player. He was an avid bowler, bowling in many state championships. Richard also had an extensive arrowhead collection and enjoyed hunting for them. Richard loved playing Bingo and spent many of his retirement years traveling to various communities to yell "BINGO!"
