Richard “Rick” Sampson passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023. There will be no formal service at this time, but a remembrance gathering for friends and family will be held at 1 p.m. April 15, at the Softball Hall of Fame building at Ellis Park. Papich-Kuba Funeral Service is serving the family.
Rick was born March 19, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, to Charles and Ione Sampson. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1962 and then attended Mason City Junior College. Rick was a radio newsman for several years in Burlington, Iowa, and for many years at KMRY in Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame, and had a strong interest in the history of Cedar Rapids. Rick also helped with the promotion of several charitable organizations.
Rick is survived by his sister, Sharon Vavra; nephews, Jay Vavra and Chad Vavra (Jen) and his great-nephew, Everett Vavra.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame.
