Richard McLaud, 82, of Cedar Rapids, passed Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral service: 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, by Evangelist Lawrence Pencook. Visitation: two hours before the service at the funeral home. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
Survivors include his children, Marye McLaud, Lisa Armstrong, Jodi (Tim) James, Jeffrey (Deanna) McLaud and Joyce McLaud; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Joyce Fritz; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Richard Dean McLaud was born Sept. 5, 1934, to Charles and Ollie (Allen) McLaud in Iowa City. He attended Roosevelt High School and Kirkwood Community College, then joined the Navy in 1960. After leaving the Navy, he became a police officer, then a special deputy sheriff for Benton and Linn counties, where he earned the nickname Keebe.
He belonged to Teamsters Local 238. Richard enjoyed fishing and genealogy and could be found watching boxing, karate and wrestling. He loved spending time with his family and storytelling, and always was joking and making people laugh.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; parents; daughter, Lora; son, Richard Jr.; granddaughter, Journie; and brothers, Charles, David and Bobby McLaud.
A memorial fund has been established.
