Richard Lee McBride
RICHARD LEE MCBRIDE
Naples, Fla.
Richard Lee McBride, 85, Naples, Fla., passed away on April 19, 2021, surrounded by loved ones.
Richard (Dick) was born Sept. 19, 1935, in St. Joseph, Mo., to the late Charles and Marie McBride.
Dick graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1953. He studied at the University of Missouri, where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity, and remained a member of the alumni association. He proudly served in the ROTC and the U.S. Navy.
He started his career in construction in Des Moines, Iowa. At the age of 30, Dick moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to start Abild Construction Company. His success can be attributed to his demand for providing an honest and reliable service for his customers. His dedication continued until his retirement in 1999.
He married Lana (Kovacik) Giesler on Feb. 22, 1980. She was the love of his life. Together they moved permanently to Naples, Fla., in 2001.
While residing in Cedar Rapids, Dick was a long-time member of Elmcrest Country Club, serving on many executive boards and as their president. In Naples, he served on the Board of Governors at Kensington Golf and Country Club for five years, the Board of Directors for two years, and was honored to serve as the second president of Kensington Golf and Country Club.
Dick was a member of the El Kahir Shrine, the Masonic Lodge, the Royal Order of Jesters, Scottish Rite, and Rotary Club.
Dick was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing with his friends and at many PGA and LPGA Pro-Am tournaments throughout the United States. His favorite place to play was the Kapalua Plantation golf course in Maui, Hawaii. A golfing highlight was having the opportunity to play at Augusta National, home of the Master's Tournament.
Dick especially enjoyed traveling. He and Lana were fortunate to travel around the globe exploring many exotic places together. He often could be found looking through the newest cruise brochure to discover what cruise they would take next.
He enjoyed reading good books, bass fishing on his boat called "Finally," cuddling with their pomeranian, and spending summers relaxing at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Georgia. On the weekends, you would find him watching NFL and college football games – always cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lana; their daughter, Dr. Amy McBride, Evansville, Ind.; daughter, Cindy Phillips, Minnesota; brother, Robert McBride, Michigan.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dick's name to Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, Golden PAWS Assistance Dogs, Inc., or the charity of the donor's choice.
