Richard L. Tharp, age 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away at the Oldorf Hospice House on Monday, July 12, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born on July 4, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of the late Donavan Tharp and Ethel (Johnson) Truman. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1957. He served in the Army Reserves for 12 years. Richard married Georganne Olin on June 21, 1959, in Cedar Rapids. He was an Ironworker for Local #89 for 42 years and Apprentice Coordinator for 30 years. He was a member of Mt. Herman Masonic Lodge, #263. He loved trap shooting, hunting, fishing and woodcarving.
Those left to remember Richard's memory are his wife of 62 years, Georganne; his children, Susan (Robert) Dunning and John (Linda) Tharp; his grandchildren, Katie Stolba, Josh Dunning and Zach, Chris and Seth Tharp; 11 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Ron Tharp and Karen Thompson. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donavan Tharp, and his faithful dog, Minnie.
A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday, July 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories on Friday, July 16, at 1 p.m. with the Pastor Bryan Lund officiating.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
The family would like to thank the staff for all of the care and support given by the Oldorf Hospice House.
