Richard Lee Langton Sr., 74, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2025.
Rich (aka Dick) was born in Cedar Rapids’ Mercy Hospital on Aug. 15, 1951, the first child of Glen and Georgia Langton.
His mother said he was a precocious child. When he was a toddler, he crawled into the family vehicle, managed to shift it into reverse and ran it into a pole.
Rich loved sports, playing football, track and field and baseball while he was in school. His favorite, however, was basketball. He was also good at knocking them out of the park when he played softball for industrial and church league softball teams.
He graduated from Jefferson High in 1969 and went to Coe for a year. The next year he headed to Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls.
When he came home that summer, he ran into Diane Fannon at the All-Iowa Fair on July 4. That first date led to a wedding on January 16, 1971.
Daughter Tricia was born in 1973, and son Rick came along in 1981.
When he had time, he coached both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at the Ellis Y.
His work career included years at Midwest Food Distributors, Rapids Equipment, and Longview Fibre. He retired from Quaker Oats in 2018.
That opened up a whole new career in catering to his grandchildren’s needs, from picking them up at school to going out for breakfast on Friday mornings. Attending all games, concerts and competitions was included.
The most importing things in his life were his faith in God, his family, his church and the Cubs.
Rich is survived by his wife, Diane, children Tricia and Brian Andersen and their children Jake, Jon and Ali, and Rick and Christina Langton and their children Meri and Gabe; brothers Chuck (Debra) Langton and Larry (Pam) Langton; sister Pat (Scott) Canterbury, nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his mom and dad.
Funeral service to be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2900 42nd St. NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025.
Visitation is from 1-2 p.m., with a 2 p.m. Memorial Service followed by a dessert reception.
