Richard "Dick" Leroy Kohl passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at
Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
He is survived by his sister, Diane Smith of Cedar Rapids; children, Jacqueline (Gerald) Creger of Miles, Iowa, Ronald (Darla) Kohl of San Antonio, Texas, and David (Holly) Kohl of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Kohl.
Dick was born to Earl and Evelyn (Smith) Kohl on July 14, 1929. He was a lifelong sports fan. Dick started playing little league baseball in 1938 for the Waltonians. He played on the varsity baseball team at McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. Dick also played AAU basketball after graduation from McKinley in 1947. He attended the University of Iowa from 1948 to 1949. Dick married Madonna Jean Meyer in September 1950 and he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War as a forward observer. Dick was employed with Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric for 40 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, boating on the Mississippi River.
In April 2009, Dick moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. His family is very grateful for the care he received at the facility.
Memorials will go toward the Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
