“A long life with love & Joy”
Born: July 19th, 1931
Died: March 27th, 2025
Richard “Rich” was born in Dubuque, Iowa where he attended Loras College and went on to get his DDS at the University of Iowa. He practiced dentistry for more than 35 years in Marion, Iowa. He also worked in the dental department at the University of Iowa for 25 years. From heaven, Rich would ask you to please smile, brush and floss.
Rich met the love of his life at the University of Iowa-JOY! They were married in Tucson, Arizona where Rich served as a dentist in the Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, they moved to Marion. Rich and Joy shared 64 years together. Their children are Todd (Tammy), Peter (Laurie), Beth (Terry), Cara (Randy), and Leah (Chris). Rich and Joy have 9 grandchildren and 10 (one on the way) great-grandchildren. They had too many cats to name!
In their later years, they spent 6 months out of the year in Arizona to avoid the frigid Iowa winters. Rich volunteered his dental services to low-income patients while in Arizona. When they happily returned to Iowa in May, they enjoyed outdoor concerts, Todd’s and Tammy’s BBQs, the library, corn on the cob and nature.
Rich’s brother, Joseph, lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Eleanor. Rich’s sister, Barbara, lives in Arizona with her husband, Ed. His parents were Joseph and Clara.
The time between Rich's birth and death is what mattered the most. He had energy and curiosity. He always experimented with new hobbies. Rich had his pilot's license for several years. He enjoyed racquet sports, travel, convertible cars, volunteering at the Community Health Free Clinic and Habitat For Humanity, golf and photography.
At 93 years old, living at Hallmar Village, he was the oldest resident and the fastest walker on his floor. Rich had a long and wonderful life filled with love and Joy!
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Marion Public Library, 1101 Sixth Ave., Marion, IA 52302.
