Richard J. Becker of Mount Vernon, Iowa, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 28, 2024, at St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 1 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2024, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. with a burial at Campbell Cemetery.
Richard served in the Vietnam War from 1966–1968 until his honorable discharge. He was the sole survivor of his platoon and dedicated his life to honoring his brothers through volunteering with the VFW at various events, as well as placing and removing flags. He was united in marriage to Nancy J Albaugh on July 27, 1968.
He loved farming and all that went with it, as each challenge presented itself, he worked tirelessly to get the work completed. He worked for Weyerhauser for 42 years and enjoyed retirement, and it gave him more time on the farm.
Richard had many friends, he could strike up a conversation with anyone and usually share a laugh before they parted ways. He had a wonderful community of family, friends, and neighbors that spent time together and looked out for one another that he loved. Richard loved nothing more than a great meal, cup of coffee, and fellowship. His smile lit up the room, and he will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Elsie Becker, and wife, Nancy Becker.
He is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Eric) Nehring; sister, Helen (Gary) Skinner; brother, Charles Becker; nieces, Jeanette (Brad) Torrens, and Chris (Mike) Rieter; and grandkids, Derek Wilson, Linder Nehring, Dalton Nehring, Layne Nehring, and Dahlia Nehring.
