Richard Lowell Hildebrand, 86, of Edgewood, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home.
He was born Oct. 26, 1930, in rural Edgewood, the son of Vallie and Ethel (Hochhaus) Hildebrand. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Littleport High School in 1948.
Richard served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, obtaining the rank of Spc. 3rd Class. After his tour of duty, he returned to farm north of Edgewood. Richard was united in marriage to Lucille Mae Spragg on Feb. 14, 1970. They farmed together until they sold the farm in 2003, but remained on the building site.
Richard enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Survivors include Richard's wife, Lucille Hildebrand of Edgewood; two stepchildren, James (Patricia) Spragg of Hudson, Fla., and Alan (Karen) Spragg of Oelwein; nine stepgrandchildren; 20 stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Judy (Douglas) Unglesbee; a stepgreat-grandson, Joe Hodge; and his sister, Beverly Hildebrand.

Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, by the Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood. Friends also may call one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment with military rites: Union Cemetery, rural Littleport.
