Richard J. "Dick" Halvorsen, 84, a resident of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla., and Marion, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
Richard was born in Chicago to Ralph H. and Helen V. (nee Melloy) Halvorsen on July 12, 1930. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and had a long career as an executive for Chicago Nameplate and U.S. Nameplate in Mount Vernon.
Dick's passions included a love of horses, which he passed along to his children. Dick also enjoyed working with his hands, whether it be construction, electrical, welding or refurbishing lawnmowers; and he loved showing and teaching his children how to fix everything. One could also count on Dick to offer a helping hand.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn (nee Futter); and their 11 children, Timothy (Anne), Sharon (John Clouse), Holly (John Falotico), Keith, Linda (Craig Umans), Douglas (Anne Jeannette), Maureen (Allan Lefebure), Sheila (Robert Grasso), Patrick (Beth), Janice and Kathleen (James Enstrom). He was the loving grandfather of 22 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his aforementioned parents; his brothers, Donald R. and Ralph H. Jr.; and four infant children, Richard, Marilyn, Christopher and Joan.
A visitation will be held at Murdoch Funeral Home, 3855 Katz Dr., Marion, on Thursday, June 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. A burial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Illinois at www.illinois.jdrf.org or The Chromosome 18 Registry & Research Society at www. chromosome18.org.
