Richard L. "Dick" Grell, 83, of Iowa City, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, at the VA Health Care System in Des Moines.
Dick was born April 18, 1932, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. At an early age, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. During this time he was awarded the Purple Heart. After 26 years of service, he retired and moved back to the Iowa City area where he owned and operated Dick Grell Sewer & Water Installation for 25 years, retiring again in 2007.
Dick is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary; son, Ricky Grell of Coralville; nephew, Danny Grell; and niece, Darcy Fry; sister, Carol Hochstetler of Cedar Rapids; and brothers, David and Bob, both of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; and their two sons, Bruce and Mike.
In honor of Dick's wishes, no formal services will take place. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Dick's family and his arrangements.
