Richard G. Himmelsbach, 79, of Norway, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway, with Father Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery. Per Richard's request, there will be no visitation, and casual dress for the service. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Richard was born May 18, 1938, to Leonard and Margaret (Frese) Himmelsbach in rural Watkins, Iowa. He graduated from Norway High School in 1956. On Nov. 27, 1956, Richard married Jane Garwood at St. Michael's Church. Together, the couple raised their family in Norway. Richard worked for 33½ years at Wilson Foods packing plant in Cedar Rapids and was an owner of Rich's Roost in the late '70s to early '80s.
Richard enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing in his youth, bowling, gardening and running around with friends.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Himmelsbach of Norway; sons, Doug (Julia) of Atkins, Tim, Ken and Greg "Joe" (Monti), all of Norway; grandchildren, Alex (Desirae Hesseltine) and Austin Himmelsbach; great-grandchild, Wyatt Himmelsbach; stepgrandchildren, Sherry (Brian) Bayeur and Amanda Vogt; stepgreat-grandchild, Brendan Bayeur; brother, Bernard (Janet) Himmelsbach; sister, Mary (Bud) Hall; and many more loving family and friends.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Himmelsbach; stepgrandchild, Shane Eckholm; and many more aunts, uncles, sisters- and brothers-in-law.
