While at Purdue, he met and married Mary Jo Bickham of Payne, Ohio, in 1954. They had two children, Cynthia Ann (born 1961) and Daniel Richard (born 1965). After graduating Purdue, Dick served at the rank of captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, which kindled his lifelong interest in railroading.
