Richard L. "Dick" Edwards, 88, of Marengo, went to be with the Lord May 22, 2014. He died at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014, St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo, with the Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo, with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 26, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Dick is survived by his wife, Wanda; four nephews, Philip Sencer of Chicago, George Edwards of Minneapolis, Gary Edwards of Marengo and Larry Edwards of Panama City, Fla.; three nieces, Linda Edwards of Coralville, Jeanne Jurgens of Davenport and Carol Graham of Davenport; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Reinhardt and wife Nadine of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; two brothers, George and Roy; and three sisters-in-law, Aileen and Vera Edwards and Norma Sencer.
Richard L. Edwards was born April 27, 1926, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of James Blaine Edwards and H. Ruth Merritt Edwards. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1944 and attended Iowa State University in Ames. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy for three years, stationed in Farragut, Idaho. He married Wanda Ardis Reinhardt Nov. 10, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grant Center. Dick farmed and was an insurance agent with Lenox Mutual Insurance Association for 35 years, retiring in 1998. He also served as secretary of that association for 27 years. Dick was a member of Marengo American Legion Post 76. He belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo, where he served as an elder for many years, and was a member of the Men's Fellowship. Dick loved his farming and just enjoyed being outdoors.
While in the Navy, Dick served aboard the USS Cabot in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The "A" Division held yearly reunions for 21 years. The Edwardses hosted reunions in Cedar Rapids, in Mount Horeb, Wis., and co-hosted with Ray and Neva Feather in Colorado Springs, Colo. He always enjoyed these events and looked forward to greeting his friends every year.
