Richard (Dick) Snavely, Coralville, recently of Mount Vernon, passed away at Lantern Park Care Center, Coralville, on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the age of 72.
Dick was born in Iowa City on April 1, 1946, the son of Carl and Dr. A. Eloise Martin Snavely. He graduated from University High School in 1964, Cornell College in 1969 and the University of Iowa with a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling in 1975. He began a 37-year career in corrections in 1969 as counselor, then psychologist, retiring in 2006. In addition, he was director of the Anamosa State Penitentiary Museum from its founding in 1997 to 2015. Dick had many interests and always was busy with some project, including aviation, pottery, photography, fishing, geology, history, genealogy and antique-car restoration.
He married Dr. Clarella (Ellie) Guider on Sept. 25, 1976. Survivors include a son, Jonathan of Waukee; a daughter, Kristen of New York City; and a brother, Keith (Kay) of Chester, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
The family will greet friends on Monday, June 11, 2018, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave. in Iowa City, followed immediately by a memorial service. Burial will take place on Tuesday at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Memorials may be directed to the Anamosa Penitentiary Museum and the student pilot scholarship program of the Greencastle Aeroclub Foundation Inc.
