Richard "Dick" Braksiek, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone with the Rev. B. Andrew Wright officiating. Interment will be held at the Keystone Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post No. 107 of Keystone. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone.
Richard Dean Braksiek was born June 21, 1932, in Keystone, to Frank Benjamin and Elizabeth (Happel) Braksiek. He graduated from Keystone High School in 1949. From 1951 to 1953, he served his nation in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged to assist his father who was dying of cancer on the farm. Dick farmed on the same farm northwest of Keystone for 60 years.
He married Delores Hoyt on Oct. 26, 1952, at Long Beach, Calif. She preceded him in death on Nov. 12, 1987.
Dick was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone, Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post No. 107 of Keystone, the Keystone Optimists, Keystone Turners and Friendly Neighborhood Card Club. He participated in antique tractor pulling, slow-pitch softball and volunteered with the Elberon Boy Scout Troop. He was active in church activities and loved watching his grandkids' sports activities.
He is survived by his children, Michelle (Don) Temeyer of Waterloo, Julie (Tom) Werning of Atkins and Gary (Lynda) Braksiek of Fairfax; his grandchildren, Rachel Mccarville, Greg Werning and Ben and Sam Braksiek; his great-grandchildren, Chance and Baylee Schoenfelder and Mya Mccarville; and his sister, Marion Franck of Cedar Rapids.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela, in 1960; great-grandson, Caleb Schoenfelder; his brothers, Stanley (Goldie) and Paul (Naomi) Braksiek; his sister, Evelyn (Roy) Pickering; and brother-in-law, George Franck.
A memorial fund has been established to benefit St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone and Iowa Special Olympics.
