Richard F. "Dick" Berger, 89, of Vinton, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at Virginia Gay Hospital after suffering a stroke. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St.,
Vinton, with the Rev. Joshua Graber officiating. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the funeral home on Tuesday. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57.
Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Auxiliary or Red Cedar Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.
Richard was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Vinton, to Leland and Louise DeBates Berger. He was a 1944 graduate of Lincoln High School in Vinton. Richard was united in marriage to Patricia Britt on Dec. 29, 1945, at Bay Mannett, Ala. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a pharmacists mate third class.
Richard retired in 1988 following a 41-year career with the Benton County Secondary Roads Department. He was a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 and Red Cedar Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.
In his leisure, Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Peggy (Berger) Kelley of Vinton; five grandchildren, Barb (Kirk) Page of Vinton, Beth (Mike) Meade of Swisher, Bernie Markey of Hills, Rachel (Eric) Gayle of Atkins and Resa Berger of Vinton; and seven great-grandchildren, Elsa, Eli and Carson Page, Isabel, Luisa and Cruz Mead and Lillis Markey.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia; son, Robert; and brothers, John and Marvin Berger.
