Rhines, Darlene Lois
Darlene Lois Rhines, 88, entered into her eternal rest on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness. As Darlene requested she has been cremated and a family scattering will take place later.
Darlene was born July 6, 1923, near Masonville, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel and Lila (Spangenberg) Slick. She attended local schools and graduated from the Lamont High School.
Darlene was united in marriage to Gayle E. “Bud” Rhines on Nov. 2, 1940, at Lamont. To this union were born five sons: Dan, James, Harry, Joe and Patrick. They lived in Evanston, Ill., until 1946, when they moved back to Lamont. In 1976, they moved to California and lived there until 1985, when they returned to Lamont. Gayle entered into his eternal rest on Oct. 13, 1988. Darlene moved to Anamosa and then to Marion, Iowa, where she has lived the past years.
Darlene was an excellent cook. She ran the Home Café in Lamont for years and had cooked at Lamont schools and the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home and other various places. Darlene's favorite hobby was playing Bingo.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a special friend, Charley Popham; her son, James; two brothers, Don (Dutch) Slick and John (Jack) Slick; and two sisters, Wilma Dozark and Nancy Caves.
Survivors include her four sons, Dan (Janet) Rhines of Chicago, Harry Rhines of Elk Grove, Calif., Joe (Ellen) Rhines of Elk Grove, Calif., and Pat Rhines of Washington, Iowa; four granddaughters, Marissa Rhines, Milissa (Greg) McTaggart, Heather Rhines and Bridget (fiance Chris) Rhines; two great-grandsons, Vetter and Daxton McTaggart; one sister, Shirley Haley of Marion; and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Fawcett Funeral Home and Cremation service of Lamont assisted the family with arrangements.
The family especially thanks her two nieces, Andrea and Chris, for the special care during her recent illness.
