She is survived by her two sons, Mark (Diana) Rettig of Cedar Rapids and David (Mary Lynn) Rettig of Middle; granddaughter, Stephanie of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Florence (Walter) Schuerer of Amana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 2008; parents; and a sister, Helen June Graichen.
Doris Marie Graichen Rettig was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Amana, the daughter of Henry W. and Minnie (Zuber) Graichen. She graduated from Amana High School in 1937 and continued her education at Cedar Rapids Business College. Doris worked as a bookkeeper for the Amana Society from 1938 until she married John C. Rettig on Feb. 3, 1945. She accompanied him to Laurel, Md., and later to Albany, Ore., where John was stationed in the Army. During that time, she was employed as a bookkeeper in the finance office at the Army bases. Upon John's discharge from the Army, they returned to Middle which became their home for the remainder of their lives. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at Amana Refrigeration, but is perhaps best remembered for the many years (1962-1990) she served as secretary and bookkeeper for the Amana Community School.
Doris enjoyed cooking, gardening, needlepoint, dining out and traveling.
She was a kind and loving wife, mother, Oma, and sister who was greatly loved.
She was a lifelong resident of the Amana Colonies and member of the Amana Church Society and the Amana Heritage Society.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of Doris' caregivers at Mercy Medical Center and Colonial Manor in Amana.
