Reno Henry Arthur Walter was born June 8, 1919, on a farm near Homestead, Iowa, the son of Carl and Meta (Huedepohl) Walter. He was baptized on July 6, 1919 and confirmed April 9, 1933 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. He attended Immanuel Parochial School. He served for the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1941 to 1945, in the Asian Pacific area. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the Oak Leaf Cluster. Reno was united in marriage to Juanita May Schlotterbeck on Feb. 1, 1948, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Atkins. Together they lived on the farm south of Oxford. He was a lifelong farmer. Reno was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, L.I.S. School board, Iburg Poulson VFW Post No. 8797 in Williamsburg and the American Legion in Oxford. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Reno passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at Mercy Iowa City at the age of 96 years.
He is survived by his three sons, Kevin (Carol) Walter of Oxford, Duane (Jane) Walter of Swisher and Todd (Lori) Walter of Oxford; seven grandchildren, Jason (Jean Moylan) Walter, Kris Walter, Dan (Kathy) Walter, Ryan (Mandy) Walter, Jenny Walter, Kate (Brian) Caskey and Lisa (Mark) Davis; and six great-grandchildren, Angel, Caden, Emily, Taylor, Colt and Brody.
He was preceded in death by parents; his wife in 2004; three sisters, Norma Schmidt, Erna Collingwood and Lillie Neitzel; five brothers, Arnold, Adolph, LeRoy, Melvin and Orville; and a granddaughter, Michelle Walter.
Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with military rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post No. 8797. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. There will be a VFW service at 7 p.m. Thursday.
