Renate Ilse Winkler Richardson, 83, went home to be with our Lord on Dec. 14, 2023, at home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa surrounded by her loving family. Private family memorial service has been scheduled after Christmas.
Renate is survived by her husband of 63 years, Doran Richardson; her daughter Linda (Chris) Kent of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter Chandler Kent of Kansas City; granddaughter Kenedy Kent of Cedar Rapids; grandson Jaegon (Jenna) Kent of Cedar Rapids; great-grandsons Amir and Azai Kent; sisters Hella Winkler Herr and Edith Mueller of Germany; brother Juergen Winkler of Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents Ottmar and Elsa Winkler; father-in-law and mother-in-law Wayne and Amber Alderson; sister Irmgard Winkler; brothers Reinhold Winkler and Kurt Winkler, all of Germany.
Renate was born Feb. 13, 1940, in Pforzheim, Germany, to parents Ottmar and Elsa Winkler. She attended and graduated school in Pforzheim, Germany, where she later met and married her loving husband Doran Richardson. Renate and Doran were united in marriage on Sept. 17, 1960, at the Schlosskirche in Pforzheim, Germany. God blessed them with a daughter, Linda Richardson Kent, on Jan. 1, 1968. Renate loved her family more than anything and was incredibly devoted to providing a loving home. Renate showed her sacrificial love by moving to the United States with her husband Doran and young daughter, Linda, in October 1975.
Renate loved life to its fullest and it was on full display every year at the Amana Colonies Oktoberfest where you could find her dressed in her finest German dirndl and Doran in his lederhosen, dancing and celebrating every year with friends and family. Renate included her daughter Linda (Chris) and grandchildren in the experience and throughout the years, you could find photos of them in the paper and advertisements for Amana Colonies Oktoberfest. Renate loved her regular trips to the Ox Yoke to share some fun with Bill and Suzie.
Renate was our “Omi” and while she was gifted in so many things, her cooking was a culinary experience that took you to southern Germany and became legendary throughout our family and friends. If you ever provided a favor to Omi, it was almost certainly returned with a meal and you immediately started looking for another favor to provide. Above all, our Omi brought us great joy and love for the many years she blessed this earth and her legacy lives on in all of her family.
