Rempe, Lee Edward
Lee Edward Rempe, 70, of Manchester, passed away at Regional Medical Center in Manchester on Friday, April 6, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial Service, with military rites: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester, with the Rev. Mike Druhl officiating. The family will greet friends: from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester. Inurnment will be at a later date.
He was born Feb. 27, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Henry and Ruth (VanHouweling) Rempe.Lee grew up on a farm near Leighton, Iowa, and graduated from Pella High School in 1960.He served honorably in the United States Army from 1964 to 1968 as a Russian translator in Berlin. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1971 and his master's degree in 1978, both from the University of Northern Iowa.
On June 12, 1971, Lee was united in marriage to Kathy Anderson at the United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls.Two daughters were born to this union.Together they resided in Manchester, where Lee was a high school English and humanities teacher at West Delaware Community Schools.During his years of teaching, Lee loved coaching cross country, wrestling and track. He retired in 2002 from teaching.
Lee was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay leader, was on the youth board,and was a Sunday school teacher. He also was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 45, served on the Manchester Library board and the Golden Age Activity board.
He enjoyed his family, working on projects with his grandson, fishing, photography, reading, writing, and mentoring youth.
Lee was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Kathy of Manchester; two daughters, Erin Rempe (fiance, Nate Learn) of Manchester and Elizabeth (Ryan) Harvey of North Liberty; three grandchildren, Alexandra Harvey, Kale Rempe and Samantha Harvey; and three siblings, Dolores Wisdom of Houston, Texas, Jerry (Marlene) of Leighton and Patricia (Tom) Larson of Algona.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ruth Rempe; his father- and mother-in-law, Merle and Edith Anderson; his stepmother-in-law, Phyllis Anderson; and one sister-in-law, Lynda Hoffmann.
