Read, Alfonso Mota
Alfonso Mota Read, 41, of Marion, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. The Rev. Bill Nielsen will officiate at the service. Friends may call starting at noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the Dominican Republic.
Surviving are his two sons, Andrew and Alex Mota of Marion; four sisters, Blanca, Maritza, Alexi and Glenny Mota Read; seven brothers, Marcial, Jose', Rafael, Eddi, Christian, Alkendri and Vicente; in-laws, Dean and Terri Culberson, Deana (Scott) Arebaugh and Rita Gervais; a nephew, Edgar (Reyna) Mota; and special friends, Janet (Manny) Tejada, Vicente (Rani) Javier and Sam Sheronick.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lynn; and a brother, Ramon.
Alfonso Mota Read was born Feb. 25, 1970, in San Pedro Macoris. He was the son of Ignacio and Petronila Read Mota. He graduated from Gaston Fernandez Deligne High School in San Pedro. On Dec. 28, 1996, Alfonso and Lynn Marie Culberson were united in marriage in San Pedro. In 1998, Alfonso moved to the United States to play baseball for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. He also played minor league ball with the Waterloo Schockers and for Las Estrellas Orientales and Los Gigantes Delcibao in the Dominican Republic.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Alfonso's children.
