Raymond Carlyle Schwartz was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Calamus, Iowa. His parents were Charles J. and Ida H. (Mueller) Schwartz. He graduated from Calamus High School and attended Navy flight training to become a naval aviator. Ray married Dorothy A. Higgins on March 22, 1947, in Wheatland, Iowa, and just celebrated their 67th anniversary.
He was devoted to spending time with his family and also enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, boating, water skiing, gardening and playing cards.
He worked for Farm Bureau Insurance as agency manager in Williamsburg for over 30 years. Ray was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday school superintendent and elder. He was a member of the American Legion, Farm Bureau and Williamsburg Kiwanis Club. He served eight years on the Iowa County Veterans Affairs Commission.
Ray passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 90 years.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Highland Ridge Care Center for all of their support over the last two years.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five children, Brock (Michelle) Schwartz of Indian Hills, Colo., Beth Goudge of Maryville, Mo., Bill Schwartz of Williamsburg, Jane (John) Jones of Overland Park, Kan., and Mark (Jennifer) Schwartz of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Donna) Schwartz of Marion and Robert Schwartz of Wheatland; and a sister, Judy Mumm of Davenport.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eleanor Schuett and Joyce Hudlik; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Schwartz and Dorothy Meints Schwartz.
A Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Gary Sears will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Buena Vista Lutheran Cemetery near Calamus.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Systems Unlimited in Williamsburg and Rural Employment Alternatives in Conroy.
