Raymond Rieniets, 94, formerly of Monticello, died peacefully, Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Pinicon Place Care Center, Anamosa, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Pastor Holly Knouse will officiate at the services. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army. Goettsch Funeral Home has taken Ray and his family into their care. Surviving is his wife, Lorna; two children, Sherry (Jerry) Behrends and Karey Rieniets; three grandchildren, Brandee (Pete) Gehl, Breanna (Jay) Welter and Jesse (Jamie) Behrends; five great-grandchildren, Elie, Tanner, John, Ben and Stella; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five siblings, Leona Bender, Kathleen Streeper, Betty Hinrichs, Paul Rieniets and Mildred Hinrichs; and brother-in-law, Harlan Helgens.
Raymond Henry Rieniets was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Richland Township, Jones County, Iowa. He was the son of Gerhard and Margaret Guyan Rieniets. He received his early education in Richland Township School No. 4. He graduated from the Monticello Community Schools, with the class of 1947. He was a truck driver for Claire Eggiman and also drove a school bus for the Monticello schools. Ray served in the U.S. Army during the Korea War. He returned home and married Lorna Helgens on May 16, 1954, at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. He started his 37-year career with Iowa Electric. He read meters in Monticello, then die appliance servicing, was a truck driver, he did sub-station maintenance and finished his career servicing electric meters. In retirement, he refurbished a store in Mount Vernon for Lorna.
He enjoyed mushroom hunting, NASCAR, helping others and spending time at the cabin in Delhi. He tried never to miss any activities for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
