Raymond Peter Michael, 89, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Urbana with the Rev. Ardel Barta and the Rev. Dwayne Thoman as concelebrants. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the church with a rosary service beginning at
2 p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, rural Walker. Military rites will be performed by U.S. Army Funeral Honors of Des Moines.
Raymond was born April 26, 1928, in rural Urbana, Iowa, the son of Peter and Elizabeth Reuter Michael. He attended county school Polk No. 13 in rural Walker.
Raymond proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951 until 1953. He was a member of Urbana American Legion Post 264. On Oct. 6, 1956, Raymond was united in marriage with Marilyn Nelson at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 1993.
Raymond farmed in the Walker area his entire life. He also raised cattle and hogs. Raymond was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Urbana and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Benton County Cattlemen's Association. He enjoyed day trips and traveling and spending time with family.
Raymond is survived by two children, Deborah (Chuck) Leaming of Hiawatha and Alan (Cindy) Michael of Vinton; very special friend, Ruby Marks of Rowley; four brothers, Bernard (Sandra) Michael of Lincoln, Neb., Harold (Bette) Michael of Independence, Gerald Michael of Vinton and Anthony (Delores) Michael of Walker; brother-in-law, Richard (Shirley) Nelson of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Jason McKinley and Ryan and Jamie Michael; two stepgrandchildren, Melissa (Ray) Erlacher and Sandy (Tim) McClure; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and siblings, Joseph Michael, Theresa Oberreuter, Virginia Thoman and Edward Michael.
A memorial fund has been established.
