Raymond Mathias Gent was born Aug. 30, 1932, in Harper, Iowa, the son of Paul N. and Mary (Clarahan) Gent. He graduated from Kinross High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On June 22, 1955, Raymond was united in marriage to Donna Sorden in Kinross. They lived and farmed in the rural South English area. Raymond was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. He enjoyed woodworking and he created (and Donna finished) many beautiful furniture items that were gifted to family and friends. Raymond died on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at his home near South English, at the age of 90 years.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 68 years, Donna of South English; children, Annette Gent, Matt Gent, Celeste (Shawn) Gallagher and Charles (Trisha Parizek) Gent; son-in-law, Pat Sullivan; daughter-in-law, Karen Gent; grandchildren, Kevin (Cara) Sullivan, Kate Gallagher, Rory (Alex Asawa) Gallagher, Rachel (Caleb) DeBoer, Riley Gent, Karlee Parizek, Jacob Gent, Mason Gent and Sadie Parizek; great-grandchildren, Morrigan Sullivan, Zoe Sullivan and Kylie Sullivan; sisters, Henri O’Connell, Pauline McDonald and Ellen (Wayne) Morrison; brother, Pat (Mary) Gent; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Gent, Jeanette Gent, Barb Gent and Elaine Sorden. He was preceded by his parents; children, Nick, Melissa, Bernadette, George and Janet; a daughter-in-law, Vicky Gent; brothers, Dennis, Marvin, Hubert, John and Leo Gent; sister and brothers-in-law, Karen Gent, Frank O’Connell, Frank McDonald and Bud (George Jr.) Sorden.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Little Creek Cemetery, rural North English. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 4 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camp Courageous.
