Raymond Keith Baker, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018. A visitation celebrating his life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private graveside service with military rites will be held in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel; daughters, Barb Baker of Cedar Rapids and Patty Terpkosh of Ridgeway; and special companion, Callie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Raymond Keith Baker was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of Raymond Orville and Margaret Emily (Freshwater) Baker. Keith served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1947 to 1949. On May 10, 1952, he married Ethel Folkmann in Keystone, Iowa. Keith worked for Link Belt Speeder for several years and then was a member of the Cedar Rapids Police Department from 1955 to 1985, serving as chief of police from 1979 to 1985. He continued his education throughout much of his adult life, getting degrees from Kirkwood Community College, the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement in Quantico, Va. He enjoyed reading, hi-fi stereo equipment and sports cars. He was an accomplished marksman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the Izaak Walton League, 5401 42nd St. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52411, or the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
