Ray Richard Penn, 94, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital. Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Marion Christian Church officiated by Pastor Peter Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Marion, and also one hour before the service Friday at the church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include sons, Doug (Rita) of Marion and Thomas (Cathy) of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Megan, Michelle and Emma.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; parents; sisters, Rowena Humpal and Navadee (Russell) McGraw; and brother, Norman.
Ray Penn was born July 5, 1921, in rural Viola, Iowa, to Irwin Lee and Bertha (Yiesley) Penn. He graduated from Viola High School in 1939. He married Barbara (Price) on March 1, 1947. He was employed by Rockwell-Collins as a machinist for 32 years. Ray was a member of the Marion Christian Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 298.
Ray was very proud of his four years of military service including two years in the combat zone of the Italian Campaign in World War II. Barb was the love of his life and they enjoyed 60 years together. He enjoyed socializing and was a story teller extraordinaire, enriching many lifelong friendships. He was very proud of his family and greatly loved and cared for his granddaughters.
