Ray Van Frischkorn, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, at the ABCM West Care Center in Independence. Funeral service: 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Chris Podhajsky. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil at 7 p.m. Friends may also visit with the family after 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; his children, Carol Frischkorn and Jeff Frischkorn; grandson, Charles Frischkorn; sisters-in-law, Patsy (Denny) Russell of Prairieburg, Iowa, and Mary Theresa (Jon) Harris of St. Louis, Mo.; brother-in-law, Joe (Nola) Kula of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rose Frischkorn; parents-in-law, Stanley and Kathryn Kula; and brother-in-law, Stephen Kula.
Ray was born in Gary, Ind., on May 1, 1943, the son of Charles and Rose (Kalita) Frischkorn. He married Susan Marie Kula on April 24, 1971, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Ray attended Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman) in Terre Haute, Ind., graduating in 1965 with an electrical engineering degree. Forever proud of being a "Fightin' Engineer," Ray was an active alumus and served as president of the Alumni Association.
Ray was recruited by Collins Radio upon graduation to develop their first computers in Cedar Rapids. He then met Susan, his wife of 43 years, while pursuing his teaching certificate at Mount Mercy College.
Embracing his entrepreneurial spirit, Ray started his own business, Korn Enterprises.
Ray began with handcrafted stained glass lamps and evolved into consulting, specializing in IBM systems engineering. He had the opportunity to work in several industries and 20-plus companies over the next 25 years, including insurance (Mutual Fire & Auto), banking (MNB), railroads (CNW, CRANDIC), and education (Mount Mercy, Coe).
Ray appreciated theater pipe organ music, serving as president and holding various other offices in CRATOS (Cedar Rapids Area Theatre Organ Society), including managing ticket sales
for CRATOS-sponsored concerts at the
Paramount.
Ray had a wide variety of interests which led
to a large collection of treasures he was proud
to display in the home
he designed and built.
Ray enjoyed being active and social and never lost his dry sense of humor, always ready with a joke to share. Ray loved his family and treasured the time spent with his wife, daughter, son and grandson, as well as the many new friends he made while living in Independence.
Ray will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to give special thanks to the ABCM West Care Center staff for their excellent care, welcoming us as part of their family these last couple years.
