Randy Earl Smith
Walford
Randy Earl Smith, 73, of Walford, died peacefully Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda; his six children from a previous marriage, Vanessa Smith, Jake Smith, Stephanie (Nick) Volk, Emily (Mark) Prahm, Theresa (Matt) Mackey, and Marjorie (Rashidi) Barrett; brother Bob (Becky) Smith; three stepchildren, Brian, Laura Jean, and Mary Beth; seventeen grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
Randy was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Johnny, Roselee, and Reggie; and his granddaughter, Mackenzie.
Randy was born January 4, 1952, in Chariton, Iowa, the son of Harry and Violet Strausser Smith. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1970. Throughout his career, Randy worked in various roles in industrial sales and enjoyed working for Sherwin Williams after retirement.
Randy had a larger-than-life personality and could easily make friends anywhere he went. His booming laughter was contagious and he enjoyed socializing with those closest to him.
Randy loved a good road trip, the thrill of drag racing, the beauty of classic cars, and a competitive game of bowling. He worked his entire life with determination, and his entrepreneurial spirit emerged at an early age when he worked to develop a recycling program in the Cedar Rapids metro area.
Randy also had a love for farming that began in childhood and would continue later in life, as he spent countless seasons helping combine and harvest fields in and around Fairfax.
Randy was deeply proud of his children and cherished the time he shared with his large family, from walking his daughters down the aisle at their weddings to holding his grandsons and granddaughters whom he admired.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 5, 2025, at Teahen Funeral Home with Sister Linda Bechen officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, December 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, and on Friday after 10 a.m. A burial will take place at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, at a later date.
The family gives special thanks to Dr. Maria Doce and the entire staff at Mercy Medical Center, Laura McLaughlin and her team at MercyCare Edgewood, the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice staff, and the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center and volunteers for their extraordinary care and kindness.
