R. Neale Downing, 87, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with military honors at 2 p.m. Inurnment will be in Smithfield Cemetery, rural Monona, Iowa.
Neale is survived by his significant other of 25 years, Sheryl Smith of Harpers Ferry; his children, Steve (Deb) Downing of Decorah, Iowa, Jolene (Kevin) Cagney of Cornelius, N.C., and Amy Downing of Lansing, Iowa; and his siblings, Bill (Nancy) Downing of Wichita, Kan., Dean (Hazel) Downing of Postville, Iowa, and Darlene (Gene) Kadera of Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Bernice (Stafford) Downing; and two brothers, Robert and Gary Downing.
