Quass, Dorothy Lorraine Hagan
Dorothy Lorraine Hagan Quass, 89, passed away Sept. 11, 2013, after a short battle with cancer. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with Pastor Craig Peters officiating. Burial will be at the Palo Cemetery following the service.
Dorothy was born Sept. 5, 1924, on a farm near Shellsburg, Iowa to J. Carleton and Alice (Melhorn) Hagan. She attended Pleasant Hill country school and graduated from Atkins High School in 1940 at the age of 15. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) from 1940-1942. On Jan. 5, 1942, she married G. Alfred Quass in Kahoka, Mo. Alfred passed away in September 1999, a few months before they celebrated their 57th anniversary.
Dorothy was a member of Lincoln United Methodist Church which then united with Buffalo United Brethren Church. In 1973, she and Alfred moved from the family farm into Cedar Rapids. They then became members of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
In 1964, she began work as a bridal consultant at Killian's Department Store until 1980.
Dorothy's favorite activity was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very proud of all their activities and their success.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, G. Alfred.
Surviving are her two sons, Stanley (Donna) Quass, San Clemente, Calif., and Jim (Teresa) Quass, Atkins; and a brother, Vernon (Marilyn) Hagan, Hiawatha. Grandchildren are Jason (Tracee) Orman, Joanna (Shawn) Troy, Tim (Cinda) Quass, Erin (Rick) Sundrup, James Quass, Brian (Maria) Quass and David (Jenny) Quass; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids.
The family wishes to thank the many family and friends as well as St. Luke's Hospice staff, West Ridge Care Center and friends from St. Mark's United Methodist Church for their kindness and their prayers.
