Prentiss H. Thurmond Jr., 58, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2021. A visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. Private burial will take place in Mississippi on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021.
Prentiss was born July 9, 1963, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Dolores Wright and Prentiss Thurmond Sr. He attended George Washington High School. Prentiss was a member of Bethel AME Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and electronics.
Survivors include his mother, Dolores Wright and father, Prentiss (Shirley) Thurmond Sr., of Cedar Rapids; siblings, Archie (Hattie) Stewart of Goodman, Miss., Martha (Dennis) Washington of Waterloo, Iowa, Milton Thurmond of Iowa City, Iowa, Vernedia (Eric) Lea-Luedeman and Quentin (Jessica) Thurmond of Cedar Rapids; children, Chante (Gerald) Thurmond, Shane Thurmond and J'nae Thurmond, all of Chicago, Darius Holt of Davenport, Iowa, Prentiss Thurmond III of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dallen Christiansen of Center Point, Iowa; five grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews; ex-wife and love of his life, Beth Martinez Thurmond; and best friend, Marc Sturges.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, David Holt; maternal and paternal grandparents.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to his neighbors and nurses who helped care for him during his final months.
Flowers are welcome, contributions may be sent to a memorial fund established on behalf of Prentiss Thurmond Jr. at Green State Credit Union in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
