Poyner, Carol A.
Carol A. Poyner, 69, of 1803 N St. SW, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center from cancer. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Survivors include her husband, William “Tommy”; a son, Jergade (Lorena) of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Jennie (Frank) Smith of Palo and Jean (Ron) Johnson of Atkins; three brothers, Martin (Marcia) Sackett of Walker, Norman (Zelda) Sackett of Center Point and David Sackett and Helen of Anamosa. She is also survived by a special friend, Sharon Hicks of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a nephew, Jeff Smith.
Carol was born Sept. 1, 1941, in Monticello, the daughter of Roy and Ina (Winch) Sackett. She married William “Tommy” Poyner on July 10, 1976, in Virginia Beach, Va. Carol worked in the office at Wilson and Co. for over 22 years. She later was a bartender at Bill Magoos for several years.
Carol was an avid bingo player, enjoyed going to Tama and traveling to one of her favorite destinations, the Great Smoky Mountains. She and Tommy owned and operated Tommy's Ts and traveled all over Iowa selling their shirts at flea markets and meeting all kinds of different people.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Fusselman and staff at Iowa Blood and Cancer, Cindy Stoddard with Mercy Hospice, and Amanda and the staff on the 8th floor at Mercy Medical Center for all the care, love and support given to Carol.
