Powers, John Issac
John Issac Powers, 76, of Cedar Rapids died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Marion by Pastor Ronald Morrow. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery, Hiawatha. Friends may visit at Teahen Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. today and again after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. American Legion Post #727 presenting military honors.
John is survived by his wife, Betty; four children, Sherry (Lynn) Hodgson of Argusville, N.D., John L. Powers of Hinsdale, Ill., Daniel D. (Debbie) Powers of Burlington, Wisc. and JoAnna (Gary) Hoium of Coon Rapids, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Benjamin, Joseph and Andrew, Jess, Nick, Jennifer, Donny, Brent and Katie; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Kathy) Powers; two sisters, Virginia Powers and Mary Kay Smith and brother-in-law, Frankie Lee (Trudy) Teslik.
His parents, two sisters and a brother preceded John in death.
John was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Ottumwa, son of Glen and Ethel Brady Powers. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Betty Teslik on Oct. 3, 1959 in Marion. He worked at W.R. Grace Co. Cryovac Division retiring in 1995 after 40 years as a press helper. He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church.
John loved music, serving as song leader and playing the organ at church. He enjoyed the time spent with his family and his church. John will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
